Portland Fashion Week and Better Living Show Eco-Panel Update

Portland Fashion Week organized a great opportunity to educate folks at the Better Living Show about the sustainable stories behind the landmark designers/brands showcased this weekend. Nau, Lizzie Parker and Anna Cohen all have one thing in common and that is, they are pioneers in the industry. With limited resources in the past available to fashion designers, each of them have been innovative in their use of and sourcing sustainable options. With great design that is appealing and yes, even stylish and sexy, consumers have options now more than ever to make a sustainable choice with the clothing they wear. My favorite quote to this end of the evening was Lizzie Parkers observation that "in the end, it's about a hot chick in a dress."

The Eco - Panel was a well attended event that garnered many excellent questions and observations from the attendees. We can look forward to future practices by the fashion industry that will help consumers make sustainable choices by a seal of sustainable approval by Sustainable Style Foundation, as well as, a standard by fashion designers that includes a baseline of sustainable business and design practices. The lively discussion led by myself and Leslie Hoffman (Earth Pledge/Future Fashion - NYC) had a honest and open tone that led to sharing and creating a sense of community that will be necessary for us all to make sustainability a mainstay in our world.

SSF - PDX

Hello from Portland. As you know from my previous blog I am down here for the weekend's activities around Portland Fashion Week and the Better Living Show. Last night was a fundraising event and highlight of some fab designers whose pieces were showcased and auctioned off for a cause. Great cause and fun and oh so stylish folks. For our PDX folks, there is a definite feeling that SSF-PDX will be starting soon. Stand by.

If you live in the Northwest, I recommend you check out Portland Fashion Week's Display Fashion Show, Party & Auction: March 27 8pm–11pm. Several acclaimed designers will launch signature pieces from their Fall/Winter 2008 collections through a fashion display, party, and auction benefiting the Children’s Cancer Association (www.childrenscancerassociation.org). These never-before-seen pieces will be auctioned off at this event. Respective designers will fit apparel to the highest bidder before the pieces are even available on the market. Make a weekend of it and check out the more of Portland Fashion Week (PFW) at the Better Living Show. I am going to participating in the events on Saturday and looking forward to it.

PFW will present a Spring Fashion Event at the Better Living Show. There will be two parts to this event on Saturday, March 28. Here is what the press release said:

In a high-fashion atmosphere, the panelists will explain the eco-fashion ethos and highlight how it saves the environment. Leading national personalities in eco fashion like Lesley Hoffman, Executive Director of Earthpledge (New York) and Rebecca Luke, Co-founder of Sustainable Style Foundation (Seattle) will participate in the panel.

Installation Fashion Show with nationally known eco-fashion labels:
Featuring Fall/Winter 2008 Collections from Nau and Lizzie Parker

All 3 designers to discuss green-fashion design and production process with the Eco-Fashion Panel

The Better Living Show looks amazing and is chalk full of fabulous panels, installations and displays, including a book signing by Ed Begley, Jr. The weekend will be full of info about sustainable lifestyle choices, right up our alley. Sustainable Style Living Tip - Use a Shopping Bag

Filed in: fashion | new york city | tips

I just got back from NYC where one thing you see a lot of are bags; Retail shopping bags, plastic bags, etc. This trip I experimented with using my Longchamp shopper and stuffing as much of my shopping in that one bag as possible. I did it. I carried my purchases around with me all day. It felt very chic and I felt oh so much better knowing that I had done my part that day. We have heard so much in the media about the plastic bag and their damaging effect on the earth. And, even though many retail bags are paper, it is still great practice to have a shopping tote for clothing as well as for your groceries. We have highlighted a lot of great alternatives to shopping bags on the site over the past few year...check them out. Remember to pick out something fun that expresses you and your personality.

Beyond the "Stuff"

In today’s world, we are hearing the word “green” and “sustainable” alot. We are hearing these words attached mostly to what we can buy to save the world. While this is a terrific start, there is more to be considered. Recently, a client of mine forwarded an email of a video that had been shown in her grade school child’s classroom “The Story of Stuff”. It is a fabulous and entertaining way to check out the production of “stuff” and how it impacts us socially and environmentally.

In 2008, I plan to devote a majority of my blogs to what we can do to save the world and keep it consistent with our personal “style”.

Our fall interns, Anne-Marie and Olivia, worked hard on creating fantastic list of Sustainable Style Living Tips and I am going to put their work to great use. Stand by for a new tip every week.

Also, there are several books out there to check out as well; if you do a quick search for “ways to live green”, a good collection of books and other blogs will come up. For us at SSF, it’s about looking at the big picture, beyond green.

I look forward to your comments and an on-going dialogue about how we can continue to save the world in style.

1 Hotel

1 Hotel

It was so great to check out what I predict, and hope, will be the worlds’ premiere destination hotel in the future last night. I went to the 1 opening where hotelier Barry Sternlight (W Hotels), recently highlighted in Vanity Fair’s Green issue, mentioned that this project meant a lot to him personally. Designed to be a luxury eco-friendly hotel and residence, the overall feel of the model suite was very hip. You got the feel of the environment without the “lodge” feel. The neutral palate was surprisingly warm and was completely Zen. SSF’s you can” live well, do good as well as look fabulous”, was completely demonstrated in the design of the space as well as the forethought behind its operating model. I did hear from Barry that if you drive a Hybrid, your parking will be free…let’s hope this policy will have to change because there are so many alternative fuel cars coming in. As far as food at 1, B.R. Guests founder Stephen Hanson, known for his fabulous franchise of restaurants in New York, Chicago & Vegas, will be the master mind behind the dining concepts. If it will be anything like the food served last night, we know it is going to be out of this world. It warmed my heart to hear the chef go on and on about shopping at our own Pike Market where the fabulous tidbits from ceviche, to oysters and mini kiwi dipped in chocolate were created from. There is already a list for the residences as you can imagine…stand by for more news on this project. It really is going to be the wonderful to have Seattle be a landmark for another amazing concept. 1residences.com. RL

New York City

Flats

Wow…what a blur NYC was. Don’t worry, we will be detailing some of the really cool things I found in our sourcebook, but overall, it was another inspirational trip. With the cab strike, it was terrific to check out all the fabulous flats that the fashionistas were sporting. It was terrific to note with folks how “hoofing it” it could be just a glam as “cabbing it”. I was super pleased to see that H&M has a line of organic cotton long oversized tees as well as great organic cotton tops that are super cute. Greendrinks at The Park was packed…we couldn’t find our buddy Margaret, but met all sorts of great folks; Including a few wonderful artists who really are unique in their approach of sustainability and art by creating access to artists who don’t have representation. This group has shows in Paris, Miami, as well as, New York City. If you are going to be in the city on September 27th, 28th & 29th, check out the Art Attack at the Hotel Chelsea poolartfair.com
[23rd bwtn 7th & 8th] My quick jaunt to Toronto was great. Canada rocks. In Mississauga, the city provides compost buckets and takes it away for you every week with the garbage and recycling. Now, that is quite civilized. RL

Moral Fervor

Winnie

Moral Fervor continues to impress me. I met with the designers in their showroom to check out Spring 08 and I know that these garments will work for any woman who wants extreme comfort and to look fabulous at the same time. For spring they are introducing a soy based fabric that feels amazing to the touch. By the way, their Fall 07 is fabulous. I picked up a couple of pieces and I think I am going to live in my MF Pocket Pullover. It is cozy and cute and perfect when paired with this seasons’ pencil skirt. MF is really focused on sustainability not only in design and fabrication, but in all aspects of their business. Stay tuned to both their site [moralfervor.com]
as well as SSF’s for more info soon about their new focus on the business end. RL

NYC Fashion Week

NY Fashion Week

I am headed to my annual fall trip to NYC for Fashion Week to check out what is new for Spring 08. I will keep you posted…on the sustainable end, I am scheduled to check out Moral Fervor Spring, Loyale, Terra Plana, etc…I plan to discover more as you know that “green” is the basic black now in the fashion industry. Both LA Fashion Week and Portland Fashion week have a green theme…we will keep you posted as we get the news…

Melissa Shoes

Melissa Boot

I just bought what I think may be a fall back shoe, especially in the Seattle rain, The Melissa boot…cute and retro, it is a “galosh” that fits…very fun and very cute and it even has a bit of a heel I like…but, the best part is that it has a sustainable story…

The designers include Edson Matsuo, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Campana Brothers, Triton,
Isabella Capeto. The shoes are made in Brazil, and employees have high wages and extended benefits. All of the shoes are made from MELFLEX plastic, a patented, hypo-allergenic, recyclable, and
extremely flexible PVC. The shoes are also cruelty free, so they are made with no animal products. Melissa shoes also recycle 99.9% of factory water and waste, and overstock styles are recycled into new styles (only the darker color shoes have
recycled material).

I purchased them at La Rousse la-rousse.com
whose owner Amanda has a wonderful eye for things that are super stylish as well as sustainable. Check her out and get on her mailing list for her weekly happy hour events.

The 11th Hour

11th hour

Leonardo DiCaprio’s documentary on climate change was a very intense yet excellent film on the environmental issues at hand. I was impressed with the depth of the discussion and the wide range of experts that both Sean and I have followed and quoted over the years. All I can say is check it out at 11thhouraction.com

Cascadia Restaurant Offers Fab Front Row to Sustainable Cooking

cascadia_2 Last weekend one of my best friends treated me to one the top ten food experiences in my life. This is an area I am constantly researching, believe me, I love being a “foody”. Cascadia Restaurant based in Seattle with Chef Kerry Sear offers Saturday Market Tours with a cooking class, lunch and wine pairings. How amazing is that? I learned so much about where the restaurant buys their food locally, how they select their food and how we can too. I learned so much and have truly been inspired to keep on the path of cooking seasonally with local foods that are organic…how perfect. Cascadia’s site notes, “Since our first day to the present day, we've sought out locally sourced ingredients, worked with organic growers, and supported sustainable processes and techniques whenever possible. Rather than relying on single-source ingredients no matter what or overpromising on our menu's organic elements, we rely on best-source ingredients from a wide variety of farmers, ranchers, markets and more…” Chef Sear truly made every recipe seem so easy and accessible, but knowing me, I will just end up at Cascadia as always to enjoy one of their fabulous prix fixe tasting menus in a couple weeks. An Inconvenient Truth Inspires...

Filed in: entertainment

inconvenient-truthSo this is my first blog entry, ever. Choosing to start out my career first blog with Al Gore's film - An Inconvenient Truth - is a pretty hefty topic, but here's the deal: go see it. Go now. Don't wait. While explaining the daunting crisis that Global Warming presents through a presentation he has perfected by going from city to city across the world, former Vice President Al Gore still provides hope and practical steps that we each can take to make a difference. But as one can expect, we have to act now. It was so inspiring to check out this film and know that it has held a place in the box office results that we could have only dreamt of when we started SSF four years ago. Our vision to use pop culture and media to educate and inspire everyone that that can make a difference through the lifestyle choices they make is held evident in this film. So, I guess it is appropriate that this first blog entry of mine really brings home what our mission is.
